Over 20 Years of Experience in Psychotherapy

I'm Stephen Baker, a qualified psychotherapist in London, with over 20 years experience of working in mental health. Initially working with addiction in the voluntary sector, I trained as a Psychodynamic Counsellor and moved to the NHS. After some years I became interested in analytical thinking and psycho-social models of working and came to Arbours in North London to develop my thinking, and train as a Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist. My experience of working in the Arbours Crisis Centre and other therapeutic communities provides an exceptionally rich clinical experience and informs how I practice today.

The human mind is complex and I have always been deeply interested in the way our life experiences shape and affect our thoughts and perceptions. Psychotherapy can be an exploration of our life choices. A chance to examine issues that continue to hamper our lives and relationships, even those perhaps thought to be resolved. By identifying and reconciling these underlying issues, we can then improve the likelihood of moving forward with our lives.

Having difficulty finding the time to just step back and think?

In today's technologically driven, ever-demanding, and increasingly uncertain world, it can seem difficult to step back and collect our thoughts, or sometimes to think at all. Psychotherapy offers a chance for you to pause, take time and evaluate the choices, experiences, and issues that are affecting your life.

When you visit my practice for a session, you are invited to turn towards your internal world and engage with yourself on a deeper level. It is a neutral, safe, comfortable, and confidential space where you can ‘free associate', without fear of retaliation or repercussion. You are able to explore and give voice to your deepest thoughts, fears, and desires. It is a place for you to explore the hidden corners of your mind in a safe and comfortable environment.

Can we work together?

Research consistently shows that irrespective of the modality of psychotherapy, it is the relationship between client and therapist that is the most ‘curative' element of the work. When we agree on a schedule, I undertake to be there for you - whether we agree to meet for 6 months or 6 years. Book yourself a consultation today by completing and submitting the form below.
